Below the summer sun
rough farm boys on tractors
in hayfields far from the barn
take breaks, swig warm water
from yellowed gallon jugs
and stomp on field mice for fun

The Color of Sauce
Red lace maple leaves outside the window
occasionally wave as if flexing or stretching,
their deep redness matches the sauce
the woman makes on the kitchen stove
with Pasillo and Poblano peppers, onions
garlic, tomatoes, salt and electric heat
mixed together with care, talent, skill
and the love of sharing good food with friends

Generations
On these hot rocky trails in summer
I wore deerskin sandals and walked naked
along these ridges and through these gulches.
My hair grew long, past my shoulders
my beard, thick as a bear’s pelt
in the days before I became old and bald.
My body grew lean from climbing these slopes
and from the hunger that haunted me
