Crazy Love
Two lovers
wrapped in plastic
fight their way free
just in time
she saves his life
mouth to mouth
watching aghast I am
unable to turn away.
The audience applauds.
They will do it again, you know,
in a closet in Bangkok
or a basement in Berlin
perhaps a club in L.A.
They will wrap themselves in plastic
and turn out their lights.
Love is crazy.
Sometimes it suffocates.

Elegy
No shepherds. No nymphs. Maybe just one: the girl the fawn strips like a fisherman’s rose. Death turns its mouth red. It can no longer lie in the lilies. Not on my watch. The lake is filthy with silver fish sticky with leeches. Lovesick, I flick a feather into the water. No stones. Only the one in my pocket, heavy as a tongue.

Who Are You Now?
fill-your-lungs:
As Plato’s Theory of Forms suggests, our minds are filled with the ideas of objects in the universe. These ideas are loosely based off of what reality holds, and sometimes it is even argued whether these ideas are reality, or whether they are, as stated, simply ideas. To me, they are reality perfected. They are what we wish to see, hold, or experience. Perfection. Now you;...

Dusting
By Marilyn Nelson
Thank you for these tiny particles of ocean salt, pearl-necklace viruses, winged protozoans: for the infinite, intricate shapes of submicroscopic living things. For algae spores and fungus spores, bonded by vital mutual genetic cooperation, spreading their inseparable lives from equator to pole. My hand, my arm, make sweeping circles. Dust climbs the ladder of light. For this...

Directions
But it is hard to speak of these things how the voices of light enter the body and begin to recite their stories how the earth holds us painfully against its breast made of humus and brambles how we who will soon be gone regard the entities that continue to return greener than ever, spring water flowing through a meadow and the shadows of clouds passing over the hills and the ground where we...

The Forgotten Actress as Isadora Duncan in Russia
The Russians loved you. And for that you loved them back. It was maternal in a way, on both sides. A country needing love, a woman with a hole as big as a country in her chest. They asked you to dance and how you obliged them! Each rib bowed in graciousness, each fingertip stretched toward the ceiling of paper stars cut by children to light your way across the stage. When you finished,...

The Crickets of Mission Creek
Those crickets on Mission Creek
they’re horny again
rubbin’ their legs together
hot and heavy.
You can hear ‘em far away
chirpin’ chirpin’
rub-a-dub, can you hear me?
Want some DNA?
I got stuff for your eggs
Good stuff, too.
Can you hear me?
I can rub these legs
together all night
until you come
and get it Baby.

Breakthrough
Bob had a list of things to do. A huge list. Several pages, both sides, small print. It overwhelmed him. Depressed him. He was stuck.
Then one day he had an idea.
“I’ll just do one thing on the list,” he said to himself. “As an ice breaker. It will free me up. Get me started.”
And so he trimmed his fingernails.
“That was great!” he thought. ...

Time ate my life
the way water erodes dirt
the way too many mornings
become too many mornings
the way memories taunt the dying.
Give me this, then:
Forgiveness …

The Old Man’s Young Friend
She came by today
feeling fragile, perhaps only tired
and he welcomed her
though feeling fragile too.
They walked the block
with the black hairy dog
made creamy sweet coffee
and hugged goodbye.
She made sure
that his door was locked
that he remembered his keys
then left him alone again.
